Wordsworth’s poem “Michael,” written in , is in the same line of descent. It is the story of a prodigal son, and return is still understood as the norm; before the boy’s departure, he and his father make a “covenant” that he will return home and carry on his father’s .   He is very rural. When he began writing poetry America was for the large part farmers - or recently off the farm. He writes a simple small farmer type poetry.
